The silly little thing. Only a child would love that raggedy old bear. It said nothing, it did nothing, it couldn't love her back, even though she thought it did. It just sat wherever she put it, arms hanging at it's sides, staring out into the far distance with the one eye it had left. She took very good care of it her whole life..all four years of it. She carried it everywhere. She held it while she slept. Of course she brought it with her the night she and her mother sat in the back of that cab going some place, she didn't know where. Her teddy bear, all skinny and matted and one eyed, was placed between them so she could keep it safe.
They arrived at a house set far back from the curb. They were not in the city anymore, that much she knew. Her mother seemed distant which made her feel alone and anxious and she felt she needed to get out of the cab quickly and quietly. She waited as her mother closed the door and watched as the cab started to slowly pull away and then she felt her hands and they were empty. Her breathing seemed to stop. She could see in her mind's eye her teddy bear sitting all by itself, with it's arms at it's sides, alone in the big empty seat. Her heart started to race and she began to run. She couldn't bear the idea of her teddy bear in that cab, scared and wondering why she had suddenly left him all alone. Her tiny legs didn't get her very far before she could no longer see the lights of the cab. She just stood there with tears streaming.
Her mother's voice was sharp. "What are you doing?". All she could manage to say was "teddy bear".
Her mother grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the house, absentmindedly saying something about getting another one.
This was her first heartbreak.
